LAYERED TRANSPARENCIES - 3 Hours

The fine fabrics and intricate details of heirloom machine sewing can be combined with quilting cottons and simple piecing to create beautiful quilts. The 12” block you will make in this class features a unique look for appliqué and reverse appliqué by using some of the fabrics of heirloom sewing. Cotton batiste, silk organza, and handkerchief linen create an overlay of varying transparencies. Organza is sheer, batiste is semi-sheer, and handkerchief linen is nearly opaque. When combined into simple motifs and layered over a colorful quilting cotton, that single fabric provides multiple color values depending on the transparency of the fabric overlay. You will learn how to make turned-edge appliqué and reverse appliqué using water-soluble stabilizer as a facing, and how to make a shaped, turned-edge appliquéd border using wash-away basting thread. The block can have borders added to make a small wall hanging or pillow, or it can be combined with others to form a larger quilt.

A zigzag sewing machine is required for this class. Skill level: intermediate
